Establishing a Successful Safety Program

This is the foundation course for the Safety Management Specialist Certificate. In this course, students gain basic knowledge in the techniques and tools used most often by safety professionals. The information provided can be used immediately on a daily basis back on the job.
The course is designed to assist the safety specialist in implementing successful occupational safety and health programs. Developing and implementing new safety programs, maintaining their effectiveness, regulatory compliance and obtaining management, supervisory and employee buy-in requires a great deal of the Safety Specialist’s time. This course teaches students how to use that time effectively.

Selling Safety

This is one of the most important courses within the Safety Management Specialist Certificate. Selling Safety provides students with ideas and techniques for improving workplace relationships. The 21 Steps to Success in Selling Safety are integrated into the course material and examples are based upon real life experiences.

Students will have an opportunity to rate themselves on how well they currently utilize the 21 Steps and will be encouraged to analyze their current communication techniques. Students will learn how to develop an environment of trust with co-workers and external contacts.

Complying with OSHA Recordkeeping Requirements

Maintaining required records is one of the most complicated aspects of OSHA compliance. OSHA Injury and Illness Recordkeeping comprises most of the course curriculum. Although OSHA and Cal/OSHA have simplified this recordkeeping process, it is still a difficult subject. This class covers minimum requirements and methods for accurate recordkeeping. Solving Safety Problems

This course provides the opportunity for students to practice the practical application of techniques gained throughout the entire Safety Management Specialist series-preparing students to solve safety problems professionally. Students practice newly acquired skills using real-life safety management problems as case studies. Students will be encouraged to seek solutions while exploring what comprises a successful safety program.

Elements critical for successful safety program management are reviewed in this course. The primary focus is continually on applying these factors to the students own organizations. The course includes a safety committee problem-solving template for those students who use or want to use safety committees.
