This course covers an introduction to basic accident investigation procedures and describes accident analysis techniques. Course topics include the reason for conducting accident investigations, employer responsibilities related to workplace accident investigations, and a six-step accident investigation procedure. The target audience is the employer, manager, employee or employee representative who is involved in conducting accident and/or near-miss investigations. Upon course completion students will have the basic skills necessary to conduct an effective accident investigation at the workplace.

This course focuses on the roles and responsibilities of the employer to develop and implement an energy control program, or lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) for the protection of workers while performing servicing and maintenance activities on machines and equipment. This course covers the requirements for construction and the safe construction and use of scaffolding using the OSHA construction scaffold standard as a guide.  Course topics include hazards associated with scaffold design, assembly, disassembly and use, types of scaffolds, determining scaffold capacity, employee qualifications and training, and maintenance, repair, and inspection requirements. Students will participate in workshops to reinforce concepts of safe scaffolding.  Upon course completion students will have the ability to identify the types of scaffolds and their components, determine safe assembly, use, and disassembly, and recognize common violations of OSHA Standards.

This three-day course is designed to enable students to recognize, evaluate, prevent and abate safety and health hazards associated with confined space entry. Technical topics include the recognition of confined space hazards, basic information about instrumentation used to evaluate atmospheric hazards, and ventilation techniques. This course features practice with permit entry classification and program evaluation.

Students will have practical hands-on experience during this course and are advised to bring the following – Hard hat, gloves, safety glasses, boots, work type clothes, hearing protection, and a personal water bottle.

Our one-day course teaches attendees how to recognize the hazards, reduce risk for adverse outcomes, and prevent exposure to keep your employees healthy for the most common health hazards in construction. Topics covered include heat illness, silica, and confined space.

This course covers the various types of common machinery, machine safe guards, and related OSHA regulations and procedures. Guidance is provided on the hazards associated with various types of machinery and the determination of proper machine safe guards. Course topics include machinery processes, mechanical motions, points of operation, control of hazardous energy sources (lockout/tagout), guarding of portable powered tools, and common OSHA machine guarding violations. Program highlights include the ability to recognize hazards and provide options for control and hazard abatement through machine safeguarding inspection workshops. Upon course completion students will have the ability to describe common machine hazards and sources of energy, identify resources for assisting with machine guarding issues, and determine methods of control and hazard abatement, and selection of appropriate machine safe guards. A mock inspection of a local plant provides hands-on experience.

Note: Requires appropriate clothing for field exercise.

Travel plans must accommodate the course end time.

This 1-day program was developed by Safety Center in cooperation with Cal/OSHA Consultation to educate supervisors and foremen in the real-life application of the Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP). It is a core safety program for residential construction, covering the eight elements of the IIPP. An integral part of this program is discussing Hazard Recognition (Find) and Hazard Correction (Fix). Also included in this course is information on the Cal/OSHA recognition programs (i.e. Golden Gate, SHARP, etc.) and on the new Cal/OSHA IIPP Consultation e-tool. (Mancomm Book Included)
