William Foss is a highly accomplished Occupational Safety & OSHA Compliance professional with an impressive 34 years of experience in the field of Occupational Safety & Health. As a Federal OSHA Outreach Trainer for General Industry, Community Emergency Response Team trainer, and American Heart Association ‘Heartsaver’ and Basic Life Support trainer, he has dedicated his career to ensuring workplace safety and promoting health awareness. William’s extensive background includes six years as an LA County EMT-B and serving as a Medic First Aid trainer, specializing in first aid and CPR/AED.
Currently, William holds the position of Safety and OSHA Compliance Specialist at UniFirst Corporation. Before joining UniFirst, he spent over two years as Occupational Safety & Training Manager at Martin Technical, where he honed his skills in safety training and management. For almost five years, William has also been operating his own successful consultancy, Foss Occupational Safety Services, providing expert consultation and training in OSHA compliance.
William pursued his education in Environmental Technology and Occupational Safety & Health at El Camino College. His areas of expertise include facility analysis for Cal-OSHA and Fire Code compliance, development of Injury and Illness Prevention Programs, training managers and supervisors in effective safety management, creating and documenting effective safety training, and developing disaster preparedness programs.

Heat Illness Safety Preparation  

 

Planning is the key to reducing the risk of “Heat-Related Illness”.

 

June 8, 2021

Using the Cal/OSHA standard as a template, this presentation will focus on the three major areas required to develop a “Heat Illness Prevention” program. 

  1. Hazard risk evaluation and writing a “Heat Illness Prevention” Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP). 
  2. Hazard minimization by providing water, acclimatization, shade, and other engineered solutions.
  3. Conducting training to prevent and respond to Heat Stress or Heat Stroke hazards. 

 

Presenter:

Steve Hanson of Western Safety Associates

After graduating high school, Steve ventured out on his own to join the US Coast Guard. Trained as a Paramedic and Corpsman at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT.  He was recognized for his proven emergency lifesaving skills. Coast Guard duties also required Steve to supervise shipboard safety. In 1984 Steve joined Western Safety Associates to form a new partnership that has lasted 30 years.  Since his time there, Western Safety Associates has evolved from its origins as a sales and marketing company to become a full-line consulting firm.

While maintaining business at WSA, Steve formally developed his specialization by completing a three-year CPMR (Certified Public Manufacturers Representative) course at Arizona State University in 1998. Manufacturing and safety issues have often brought up new opportunities over the years.  Steve found demand among consult construction, municipal, and manufacturing clients. He specializes in occupational safety, environmental compliance, and regulatory consultation.
