Are gift cards available?

Are motorcycles provided?
  • Safety Center provides the motorcycle for student use while participating in the training.
  • Training motorcycles are typically 125 – 250 ccs, Kawasaki, Yamaha or similar
Are the classroom sessions done at home or onsite?
  • The two “classroom” sessions (C1 and C2) of the training are done via Zoom from home on a computer, laptop or tablet which are best for viewing videos and PowerPoint presentations, rather than on a smart phone.
  • Students must be on camera at all times during the Zoom session.
  • Students will be sent their Zoom invitation early the week of their class. If the invitation has not been received by the Wednesday before the class, please call 916.438.3362 or email motorcycle@safetycenter.org.
Are there cancellation or reschedule fees?
  • Cancellations requested 10 days or more in advance of the course date will receive a 100% refund.
  • Cancellations requested within 7-9 days in advance of the course date will receive a 75% refund.
  • Cancellations requested 3-6 days in advance of the course dates will receive a 25.
  • There is a $50 reschedule fee for changes less than two weeks prior to your scheduled class.
How can I complete the course if I missed or failed part of the training?
  • Standby List – no additional cost
    • Students who miss part of the training or fail either or both the knowledge test or the skills assessment may return as a standby student by calling 916.438.3379 between 8:00 – 11:00 am only on the Thursday prior to the weekend student is available to participate. Should a seat become available an Instructor will notify the student of the range location and time they are to report.

Note: A new list is generated weekly. If you are not called to report for Standby, you must repeat the process for any week you are available to complete the course; your name is not automatically carried over to the list the next week.

How can I get a replacement for a lost / misplaced DL389?
  • If your certificate was issued more than one year ago:
    • Certificates that have expired are non-renewable or replaceable.
    • Student will need to pay for and repeat the course.
  • If your certificate was issued less than one year ago you may request a Request for Replacement of Certificate of Completion form by:
I’m ready to go! How do I register?

Your registration confirmation will be emailed to you upon completion of your paid registration. The emails will contain:

  • A link in the first paragraph to the Student Handbook to study prior to the course
  • The course schedule. Note: “Classroom” sessions are completed via Zoom from your home computer, tablet or smart phone.
  • Receipt for payment of course fee.
I’ve completed the course. What’s next?

Congratulations!

  • DL 389s are mailed to the student’s home (registration) address within two weeks of completing the program.
    • Have you moved since your registration? Please call 916.438.3379 to update your address to prevent delays in receiving the DL389.
  • Your original DL389 must be presented to DMV; copies are not accepted. DL389s are valid for one year from date of issue and are non-renewable.
  • All students should refer to the DMV Requirements regarding motorcycle licenses for all ages: https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/motorcycle-handbook/license-requirements/
    • Issuance of a motorcycle permit or an M1 motorcycle license is subject to DMV’s rules, regulations, and requirements.
      • You will need to successfully complete the DMV written exam and pay any associated fees if you don’t currently have a permit.
      • Present your DL389 Certificate of Completion of Motorcycle Training to DMV
        • The DL389 may waive the skills test at DMV.
      • IMPORTANT NOTE for Students between 15-1/2 and 17-1/2 years of age:
        • You are required to provide your driver education and behind-the-wheel driver training certificates of completion, as well as any other requirements of DMV, before you can be issued a motorcycle permit. Please refer to the link above regarding license requirements.
Is riding my own motorcycle or scooter permitted?
  • Two of three requirements must be met to use your own motorcycle or scooter for training:
    • Under 500 ccs
    • Under 400 pounds
    • Under 30” seat height
  • Additionally, the motorcycle or scooter must be:
    • Registered
    • Insured
    • In good working order
What does the MTC program cost?
  • $350 for students over 21 years of age – payment due at time of registration payable by credit card [Visa, MasterCard, Discover]
  • $295 for students 15-1/2 to 20 years of age – payment due at time of registration payable by credit card [Visa, MasterCard, Discover]
What is required to register for the course?
  • The MTC program is intended for beginner to skilled riders. Training starts with the very basics for all to become a safe rider. At a minimum, a student must be able to ride a bicycle to properly ride a motorcycle.
  • For students 21 years old and older: valid government issued picture ID (driver’s license, passport, state identification card)
  • For students 18 – 20 years old: valid government issued picture ID (driver’s permit, driver’s license, passport, state or student ID)
  • For students 15-1/2 – 17 years old (driver’s permit, driver’s licenses, passport, state or student ID)
    • Must be 15-1/2 years on first day of class and accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who must sign the waiver in person at the first range session.
  • A motorcycle permit is not necessary to take the course.
  • Please enter all registration information carefully and check for accuracy before submitting payment:
    • Spelling of name as it appears on your identification document
    • Phone number and email address
    • Mailing address including apartment, suite or space number or a PO Box if mail not received at your physical address
      • Your DL389 Certificate of Completion will be mailed to this address upon successful completion of the course
    • Driver’s license number and expiration date
  • All students should refer to: https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/motorcycle-handbook/license-requirements/ for current requirements by DMV to obtain a motorcycle permit or M1 license.
  • IMPORTANT NOTE for Students between 15-1/2 and 17-1/2 years of age:

What is the format for the MTC program?
  • Class sizes are limited to 12 students per range.
  • Students must complete four sessions, in successive order, as well as pass the written knowledge exam and a skills assessment to receive a DL389 Certificate of Completion of Motorcycle Training.
  • Course sessions are:
    • C1 “Classroom”done via Zoom from home5 hours
      • This session is either on Thursday or Friday evening (selected at time of registration)
    • R1 “Range” – hands on riding at either our Bradshaw or Mather ranges (selected at time of registration) – 5 hours
      • This session is on Saturday:
        • Morning ride time for students registered in Thursday class
        • Afternoon ride time for students registered in Friday class
          • A one hour break follows R1 Range session for students to return home before C2 Zoom session
        • C2 “Classroom”done via Zoom from home4 hours
          • This session is on Saturday – one hour after the R1 session
        • R2 “Range”5 hours
          • This session on Sunday:
            • Morning ride time for students registered in Thursday class
            • Afternoon ride time for students registered in Friday class
            • Prior to R2 Range, students take the written exam (Instructor will advise time and location)
              • 50 multiple choice questions
              • Must score 80% (40 correct) for a passing grade
            • At completion of R2 Range, the skills assessment evaluation is completed
              • Must score 20 or less to pass
          • Successfully passing both the knowledge (written) and skills assessment necessary for student to receive:
            • Completion Card (good for potential discounts with insurance company and at Cycle Gear stores) – presented at the end of the course
            • DL389 Certificate of Completion of Motorcycle Training – mailed to student’s registration address within two weeks of completing the course
What will I need to participate in the MTC program?
  • Student must provide their own:
    • Computer or tablet (recommended) or smart phone with camera and microphone to participate from home in the two Zoom “classroom” sessions. Student must be on camera at all times during the Zoom session.
    • Gear required for Range riding sessions:
      • Full or ¾ coverage DOT compliant helmet*
      • Full fingered leather or motorcycle specific gloves
      • Over the ankle boots – sturdy construction or leather
      • Long sleeved shirt or jacket
      • Long pants with no rips, tears or flare to the legs
      • Shatter proof eyewear (sunglasses or prescription glasses)

*Loaner helmets are available, however, due to COVID protocols, student must wear a head covering and face mask while borrowing a helmet.

Additionally, all students:

  • Must be on time to all sessions. Students who arrive late to the Zoom or Range sessions will not be permitted to attend and will be considered to have voluntarily dropped the course.
  • Should read the MTC Student Handbook (link provided in their Registration Confirmation email) for in class participation and in preparation for the written knowledge exam.
  • Should be prepared, alert and focused during all sessions.
  • Should avoid any distractions during the Zoom sessions.
    • Any student driving, drinking, smoking marijuana, sleeping or inattentive during the sessions will be dropped from the Zoom session and will not be re-admitted.
  • Should be aware that no display of threatening, obscene or inappropriate messages on Zoom, clothing or helmets is permitted.
  • Should be understand that at the discretion of the Instructors, students who don’t demonstrate the ability to ride a motorcycle safely may be asked to leave the course.
  • Should understand that any student who engages in any type of safety violations (horseplay, unsafe acts or failure to follow instructions or directions, etc.) will be dropped from the course immediately and will not be invited to return and the registration fee will be forfeited.
When are classes offered?
  • Classes are offered weekly at both our Bradshaw and Mather Ranges

Where is my registration confirmation?
  • Registration confirmations are generated and emailed when your paid registration is complete – please check your SPAM, CLUTTER, JUNK MAIL – search for: org Training Confirmation in the Subject line.
Where is my Zoom invitation?
  • Zoom invitations for the C1 & C2 “Classroom” sessions are emailed early the week of the class – please check your SPAM, CLUTTER, JUNK MAIL – search for: CMSP Motorcycle Training Course @ Safety Center Bradshaw & Mather Ranges Reminder and Zoom invitation in the Subject line.

 

  • You cannot advance request to be placed on Standby for any class beyond the course scheduled that weekend.
  • Guaranteed Seat in an Available Course for an Additional Fee
    • Students who prefer to guarantee a spot, rather than participate on Standby may purchase a guaranteed seat in an available future course at one half the cost:
      • $175 for students over 21
      • $147.50 for students under 21.
