This half-day course covers a condensed version of the Cal/OSHA statistics, excavation standards, use of protective systems, soil analysis, timber and aluminum hydraulic shoring, tabulated data engineering, and competent person requirements.  Attendees must have completed Safety Center’s Excavation, Competent Person course within three years, and must bring all company required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)-hard-hat, gloves, steel-toed shoes, etc., to class.

This Confined Space Awareness course is designed to educate students working in the vicinity of confined spaces so that they may be able to identify what a confined space is and the associated hazards found in both general industry and construction worksites.

Upon completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Identify the hazards associated with confined spaces and the regulations covering confined spaces.
  • Identify criteria for confined spaces and permit-required confined spaces.
  • Understand the duties of confined space entry team (supervisor, attendant, entrant).
  • Have a general understanding of equipment and personnel requirements, gas monitors, and system ventilation

This course is intended to serve only as a basic awareness course for students that may work around confined spaces and is NOT intended for those workers who are required to enter a confined space.

Students will receive

  • Digital Student Workbook – It is highly recommended to print out the workbook prior to class

This course will increase your knowledge of OSHA’s standard, 29 CFR 1910.146.  Discover scope and definitions, general requirements, permit space programs, and rescue and training.  This is an introductory course and does not fulfill the training requirements to certify the student as a “competent person.”  Topics include: Definitions, Permit Space Program, General Requirements, and Rescue Requirements.

This course emphasizes Title 8 general industry standards and compliance.  The Cal/OSHA 30-hour General Industry Outreach Training was specifically devised for safety directors, forepersons, and field supervisors; the program provides complete information on Cal/OSHA compliance issues.  Topics include: injury and illness prevention program (IIPP), multi-employer and dual employer, machinery and machine guarding, hazardous materials, confined space, industrial hygiene, lock out/tag out, ergonomics, electrical safety, heat illness prevention and many other safety topics.  Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a Cal/OSHA 30-hour General Industry Outreach card.

This 1-day program was developed by Safety Center in partnership with Cal/OSHA Consultation to assist supervisors, team leads, safety coordinators, or anyone who is responsible for implementing an EFFECTIVE Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) by addressing the eight core elements of California’s Code of Regulations, Title 8 -§3203: Responsibility, Compliance, Communication, Hazard Identification, Hazard Correction, Accident Investigation, Training, and Recordkeeping. Students will gain a better understanding of their roles and responsibilities.

With his fleet training background, he has over 30 years experience in training and fleet program implementation – including providing over 400 fleet driving safety classroom and on-road courses for dozens of national firms including Exxon, Conoco, Compaq Computer, Amoco, Occidental Oil, Weyerhaeuser, the US Marine Corp, and similar organizations.
